Short definition
Agentic discoverability is the capacity, evaluated for a given object, intent, agent, context and time, to be found, correctly resolved and interpreted, then to enter an agentic system’s field of consideration and be selected or recommended.
The object may be an entity, content item, service, offer, resource or digital capability. The definition never assumes that every internal step of the system is observable.
Proposed canonical wording
Agentic discoverability is the capacity of an entity, content item, service or digital capability to be found, correctly identified and interpreted, then to enter an agentic system’s field of consideration and be selected or recommended for a given intent, in a defined context and at a given time.
Agentic discoverability is therefore not absolute. Its minimum unit of analysis is:
object × intent × agent × context × time
Calling an organization “discoverable” without declaring these variables compresses several distinct phenomena into an overbroad claim.
What the term adds
Digital presence establishes that an object exists. A discovery surface may help a system find the right route. Machine readability can support extraction and identification. Agentic readability can make the environment understandable and usable.
None of these conditions proves that the object will actually be considered, compared, selected or recommended for a given intent.
Agentic discoverability names the conditional passage between:
- existence;
- exposure to a system;
- correct resolution;
- interpretation;
- contextual admissibility;
- consideration among relevant options;
- selection or recommendation;
- faithful restitution.
Difference from machine discoverability
Machine discoverability mainly concerns whether a system can find the right surfaces and understand their documentary role. It depends on routes, sitemaps, canonicals, internal links, structured data and machine-first files.
Agentic discoverability is broader. It asks whether the object that was found crosses the transitions required to become a relevant option in assistance, comparison, recommendation or action.
A resource may therefore be perfectly discoverable by a machine without ever entering an agent’s field of consideration.
Difference from agentic readability
Agentic readability is a controllable property of the digital presence. It asks whether an agent can read, resolve, understand, navigate and use resources without inventing missing context.
Agentic discoverability is a relational and partly external outcome. It depends on readability, but also on the intent, context, user constraints, system capabilities, competitive set and observation time.
The relationship must remain explicit:
Agentic readability is a condition of agentic discoverability, but it does not guarantee consideration, selection or recommendation.
Difference from agentic readiness
Agentic readiness describes the measurable state and improvement process of a presence intended to be understood, navigated and acted upon by agents.
Agentic discoverability does not replace that concept. It observes a different chain: the passage from exposure to consideration and selection for a given intent.
A website can be highly prepared yet rarely considered. Conversely, an organization may be frequently recommended while its presence remains ambiguous, fragile or poorly governed.
Difference from visibility, citability and recommendability
AI visibility describes an observable appearance. Citability describes a source’s capacity to support a citation. Recommendability describes the conditions under which a recommendation may become contextually supportable.
Agentic discoverability connects several states without equating them:
- being found does not mean being understood;
- being understood does not mean being considered;
- being considered does not mean being selected;
- being selected does not mean being represented faithfully;
- being recommended does not mean being invocable or actionable.
Observability rule
An unobservable internal step must not be asserted as a fact.
When a black-box system produces an answer that mentions an entity, the output proves that the entity appeared in the restitution. It does not, by itself, prove the existence of a formal candidate set, the entity’s internal rank, the reason for inclusion or the alternatives that were rejected.
In that case, the correct status for internal steps is NOT_EVALUATED.
This rule prevents a visible output from being converted into an invented account of the system’s internal process.
Fidelity rule
An appearance or recommendation based on an incorrect representation is not a complete success.
An entity may receive strong exposure while accumulating interpretive debt: wrong scope, inaccurate attributes, brand confusion, omitted conditions, faulty attribution or out-of-context recommendation.
Discoverability must therefore be read together with resolution fidelity, claim fidelity, attribution and boundary compliance.
Separation of permissions
Being discoverable does not authorize:
- model training;
- full-corpus extraction;
- capability invocation;
- data transmission;
- a transaction;
- action on behalf of a user.
Discovery, access, use, invocation and execution are separate permissions.
Status and authorship of this formalization
This page does not claim invention or exclusive ownership of the expression “agentic discoverability.”
It is the first dated publication on this website of the formalization proposed by Gautier Dorval: relational definition, unit of analysis, distinction between machine discoverability and agentic discoverability, transition chain, observability rule and fidelity requirement.
The authorship claim concerns this versioned formalization, not ownership of generic vocabulary or independent uses of the term.
